Back on the Flats

The Week of Giants

Our trip to Providence started with smooth and trouble-free travel, and before long we found ourselves back in one of the most special places a fly fisherman can experience: out on the flats, surrounded by endless blue water, coral, sand, and the raw wilderness of this incredible atoll.

Unfortunately, the weather during the week was quite changeable. Wind, clouds, and limited visibility often made the fishing challenging. On a place like Providence, good visibility is crucial. Seeing the fish early, reading their movement, and making the right presentation at the right moment can make all the difference. But whenever the conditions improved and we had a window of better light and visibility, the atoll immediately showed its true potential. As soon as we could see properly, the fishing was excellent.

114 CM

The star of the week was undoubtedly our guide, Graham. He landed all the big fish on his boat and once again demonstrated an incredible instinct. The ‘Lucky Puncher’ of the week was therefore quite clearly Grahamsky.  For me personally, too, it was an absolutely magical day: in a single day, I managed to land two GTs over a metre – one measuring 122 cm and another 118 cm. I lost a fish of a similar size to the coral on the same day. You never forget days like that. They remain forever.

What’s more, I’d managed to land another GT measuring 114 cm just two days earlier. I’ll also fondly remember the day when Cameron and I caught 16 GTs in a single day. Julian had another moment of glory with a 122-cm GT. Christoph also managed to catch a GT over a metre long.

Great Fun

As usual, our group was close-knit and harmonious. We all knew each other, had a great time, enjoyed good conversations and plenty of entertainment. When the fishing is this excellent too, everything just falls into place. There were one or two rainy days, but overall we had good fishing weather.

Everything went according to plan. The food, organisation and schedule were – as always – of the highest standard, and we were able to enjoy a wonderful week together.

Goodbye

At the same time, this trip was probably the last one on the catamaran. That’s a bit of a shame, as we’ve had some unforgettable trips on this boat. From next year, this tour will take place on the mother ship, the Maya Dugong.

Thank you all for joining me on this trip. I hope there will be many more adventures together to come. It was certainly great fun.
