Discover the
Providence
Atoll

Providence Atoll is located 700 kilometres southwest of Mahe and 56 kilometres north of Farquhar Atoll, the southernmost atoll in the Seychelles. This remote atoll has a total area of 345 km² including the large lagoon, which stretches 55 km from north to south and 14 km from east to west. The atoll consists of two islands, Providence North and Cerf Island, and a shallow lagoon system with vast plains and sandbanks connected to the ocean by countless feeder channels. The large ear-shaped lagoon with safe anchorages downwind offers easy skiff access to the fantastic fly fishing grounds. It is one of two destinations in the Seychelles where you can catch the bumphead parrotfish.

It pays to be quick – there are still a few places left on this popular tour.

Here we go!

Into the wild

Providence Atoll is unique and probably the most interesting atoll in the Seychelles. The many finger flats surrounded by huge lagoons and channels offer the opportunity to roam 345m2 of unspoilt sandbanks, turtle grass fields and surf zones and to fish for a variety of fish species. Fly fishermen can catch bonefish, triggers, milkfish, permit, snapper, grouper, barracuda and even the bumphead parrot. Providence is also known for its first-class offshore fishing. If you want to catch a pelagic fish, you have the best chance of catching a tuna, sailfish or wahoo here.

  • 1 rod for Bonefish: line class 7 or 8

Fly Reels

It's crucial that reels for GT fishing have a reliable drag system and sufficient backing (50-80 lbs) capacity (minimum 250 - 300 meters). Also, for Bonefish and Permit, there should be at least 200 meters of backing on the reel.

Fly Lines

It's essential that fly lines are suitable for tropical conditions. Brands like Rio or Scientific Angler offer a good selection of appropriate lines. Bring at least two backup lines for GT fishing and one for Permit!

Giant Trevally: The main lines to consider are floating lines. However, it's also important to have a full sinking line, as fishing in deeper waters is common.

Permit, Triggerfish, and Bonefish: Choosing a floating line that matches the rod weight is the right choice.

Leader Material: Fluorocarbon or Nylon

Giant Trevally and other predators: 100 lbs Permit, Triggerfish: 15 lbs and 20 lbs Bonefish: 12 lbs and 15 lbs

Knots

Giant Trevally:

  • Double Figure Eight Knot
  • Improved Homer Rhode Knot
  • Perfection Loop

Permit, Triggerfish, and Bonefish:

  • Non-Slip Loop Knot

Fliegen

Giant Trevally: It is crucial that GT flies are tied on very strong hooks.

  • Owner Aki - Size 5/0 and 6/0
  • Tiemco SP 600 - Size 5/0 and 6/0
  • Gamakatsu SL 12 S - Size 8/0

My preferred flies are baitfish patterns around 17-22 cm in length. The best colors are: Tan/white, Black/Purple, Black/red, Total red, Orange

Permit and Triggerfish:

  • Avalon Shrimp
  • Flexo Crab
  • EP Permit Crab
  • Various Shrimp patterns

Bonefish:
Spawning shrip, Gotscha, Christmas Island Special
